CHAPTER 8

There was no sleeping for me that night. I spent it staring at the contents of the bag spread over the kitchen table back at my apartment. The vixen was an enigma.

When the sun came up, I remembered to call Caron-Grant. This time he answered the phone and not the butler.

“Good morning, Mr. Wrench. How did everything go? Did you get any more information?”

“Nothing other than a bag full of more questions, baby clothes, and pictures. I haven’t puzzled it out yet but I’ll find something. This stuff might lead me somewhere.”

“Baby clothes and…” Caron-Grant’s voice trailed off in a mumble of words.

“I went ahead and turned over five hundred to the dame.”

“Good, I’ll arranged the wire transfer.”

“Thanks.”

After I rang off, I put everything back in the bag and went to bed. The next thing I knew the phone was ringing like there was no tomorrow. When I answered it, the anger in Velvet’s voice was tinged in relief.

“Hello, Kaiser? Where have you been? Do you have any idea what time it is? I’ve been calling every bar in town trying to find you.”

“Been sleeping here in my apartment.”

“I called there. Several times.”

“I was tired.”

“Tired from your latest workout partner or passed out? Never mind. Duke called. It had to do with James Freely.”

That had me awake and paying attention. “I’ll call him now. Talk to you later.”

I hit the cutoff bar on the phone base, took a breath, and dialed police headquarters. The dog at the desk said the captain had been in earlier but didn’t know where he was now.

I hung up the phone and decided to get cleaned up. Halfway through my bath, I heard the phone ring and jumped out of the tub to answer it.

“Hello?”

Duke chuckled. “What kind of hours do you keep, Kaiser? It’s almost one.”

“Don’t you know? I make my own. Velvet said you had information?”

“Yes. Well, one of the inquiries I sent out about James Freely came back and put him in a bad light. Seems he matches a description of someone wanted for murder. Only thing is, the witness is dead. I’ll do some follow up, try to get more information, and let you know what I find. Right now, I’m dealing with a dead otter.

“Anyone interesting?”

“A hostess from the Malibu Club.”

I swore and said, “Let me guess, suicide.”

Duke didn’t say anything for a full minute. “Please, do not tell me this one is murder.”

“Was her name Adaline Marsh?”

“Yes.”

“Is she at the morgue?”

“Yes.” Dukes voice was turning into a growl.

“I’ll meet you there in twenty.”

When I got to the coroner’s office, Duke was pacing the hallway. He took me straight to the body and flipped back the sheet. “This her?”

“Yes.”

“Does she have a connection with the Seadrift case?”

“Yes.”

“Damn it, Kaiser. The coroner is positive it’s suicide.

“She was murdered.”

Duke’s tail drooped along with his ears. “Let’s get something to eat and talk about this.”

“I’m not hungry.”

“Well I am. Now let’s go.”

We stopped at a little Italian place down the street, and Duke ordered spaghetti.
